About Miami
Miami is a coastal city in Florida, United States. The city is known to be a global city because of its importance in commerce, trade, finance, art, international trade and entertainment. Miami is known to be accommodating the largest number of cruise ships in the world and is home to several cruise ship companies.
It is also known to be an important city internationally for fashion, television entertainment and performing arts. Miami is to known to be America’s cleanest city as well as the richest city in United States.
History of Miami
Miami is the only major city in United States to be found by a woman, Julia Tuttle who was a wealthy Cleveland native. Miami was first known to be inhabited by the Tequestas but was later taken over by Spain in 1566. Miami’s growth had picked up in 1894 during the great freeze when the only crops to have survived in Florida were in Miami. With only a population of 300, Miami was officially declared as a city on July 28, 1896. Miami’s population and infrastructure had expanded during the 1920s and during the World War II it played an important role in the fight against the German submarines due to its location. Miami’s population expanded during the war and further expanded when many Cubans migrated to the city after the rise of Fidel Castro. Although Miami faced several setbacks, it managed to become an important international center for finance, culture and art in the later half of the 20th century.
Population and Climate
In 2007, the estimated population in Miami was 424, 662. It is the most populated city in the Miami metropolitan area and the fourth largest urbanized area in the United States. Due to its geographic location Miami enjoys a topical climate. Miami has hot and humid summers and dry and warm winters. In summers the temperature ranges from 26-32 degrees Celsius and in winters on an average the temperature remains around 18 degrees Celsius.
Economy
Miami is one of the most important financial centers in the United States. The city is home to several company headquarters and is an important center for international trade, commerce and finance. Since Miami is close to Latin America it serves as company headquarters for several Latin American MNC’s like AIG, Cisco, Disney and FedEx.
The port of Miami and Miami international airport are the busiest points of entry in the country for cargo from the Caribbean and South America. Brickell, which is Miami’s financial district, boasts of the largest concentration of international banks in the country. Miami’s economy is also highly dependent on tourism; the city draws as many as 12 million visitors each year from across the country and the world. In 2005, Miami witnessed its largest real estate boom, which in 2007 has crashed. According to various surveys, the city is known to be the least affordable places to own a home.
Miami is different to different people. The city is vibrant and alive, and has a character of its own, its rich cultural heritage, history and art makes it an important city in the United States.
